Hillary Clinton is Right: Bush should Boycott Olympics

April 7, 2008

Catholic League president Bill Donohue backed Senator Hillary Clinton's plea to President Bush not to attend the Olympics opening ceremony:

"It is one thing to call for a boycott of the Olympic games-too many innocent athletes would be punished-but it is quite proper to use the symbolic importance of the opening ceremony to drive home a much-needed message: China can't pretend to be religion friendly while routinely censoring religious liberty. Senator Clinton gets it just right when she urges President Bush to boycott the opening ceremony, saying ‘Americans will stand strong in support of freedom of religion and political expression and human rights.'

"Last November, I wrote a letter to the 15-member Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) asking for an investigation into allegations that the Communist Chinese government was planning to violate the Olympic Charter by banning athletes from bringing Bibles to the 2008 Olympic Games. It now appears that some 20,000 Bibles will be made available by the government.

"In last year's report on the status of human rights in China, Freedom House concluded that ‘Though constitutionally recognized, religious freedom is accorded little respect in China.' Just last month, the U.S. State Department issued its findings on the same subject, and came to even more specific condemnations. ‘Harassments of unregistered Catholic bishops, priests, and laypersons continued, including government surveillance and detentions,' it said. Indeed, ‘In June [2007] police detained 73-year-old Jia Zhiguo, an underground bishop...and held him for 17 days in an unknown location.' And as important as anything, ‘The state-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association (CPA) does not recognize the authority of the Holy See to appoint bishops.' This is something Pope Benedict XVI strongly protested last July.

"The repression of Tibetan monks is also a disgrace. For all these reasons, we commend Sen. Clinton and urge President Bush to follow her advice."

Just don't be fooled why LYING Hillary is doing this NOW.  At least 3 major lies she has told have come out in the last few days.  INCLUDING the lie of omission regarding what happened at the impeachment trials of Nixon.  SHE DID NOT WANT HIM to have representation (should Bill have had it?!) which is unconstitutional.  She hid files and cases to try to make this happen.

 see wnd.com for the story

She stole the human rights of women who rightly accused her husband of abuse, assault, rape.

Regardless of the evil Sen. Clinton has done and continues to do, she is a voice of truth on this issue.  God loves all good works, no matter who does them or why.  Be glad that she is for once in the right, and pray for her continued conversion.

Sounds like Hillary could be right this time. All I can really say safely is she is for abortion herself, so how safe is it to trust her?

Not a supporter of Hillary in any way.  But the truth is that we as Americans need to send China a message that its herd nosed and unrelenting practices are not acceptable.  Boycotting the opening ceremonies is a way to this.  And all the countries of the world that receive support from the U.S. should do the same.

Arkanabar is quite correct.

You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemy.  But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:  That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust.  For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? Do not even the publicans this?  And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? Do not also the heathens this?  Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5: 43-48)

I tend to have a different view.  I see boycotts of such nature as misaligned.  I'm not naive to thing that politics can be void from the Olympic games .... but boycotts are also chances lost.  The lack of participation means no presence, which means little media, which means fewer interviews, which means less coverage ... all of which leads to being on the outside looking in ... vs. on the inside where an impact can be better exposed and made.   For all of China's failings, and there are many — one can argue that they are moving in the right direction unlike many other countries.  As for Clinton's position, that's nothing more than campaign grandstanding.

Boycotting the opening ceremonies is a spineless way of pretending to do something yet doing nothing. No wonder the wife of the well connected husband of the Chinese thought of it. We boycotted the Soviets and the athletes, politicians and businessmen recovered without a blemish.

We could do the same this time and show true love of the enemy and make a sacrifice for those whose lives and wellbeing are on the line at the hands of the Chinese communists who continue to promote the red scourge throughout Asia.

The ships of consumer goods going to ABC-marts will not be called back, you can be certain of that.

The linguini spined West will do the expedient thing after the Chinese make a few Hillary style symbolic gestures and overtures.

Let the games begin, says Caesar.

Two young men on my swim team made the 1980 Olympic team.

I am pretty sure they had nothing to do with the eventual Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan.

But I know they never swam in an Olympics.

If the purpose of the Olympics is to put high-vis pressure on various nation states, then let's not have Olympics.  But if the purpose is to put international policy aside and let athletes compete freely, then let's do that.

The light will not overcome the darkness by keeping the lamp out of the room.

China can get bad press with or without the atheletes there.
