The Hypocrites are Back at UVA

March 14, 2008

The March 14 issue of the University of Virginia's student paper, The Cavalier Daily, featured a cartoon depicting a naked man smoking a cigarette in bed. Standing beside the bed, a woman in her underwear buttons up her shirt and asks, "Come on God, be honest-Did you really get a vasectomy? I can't let Joseph find out about this." The man replies, "Well, Mary, you're F***ed." Yesterday's paper ran a comic portraying a crucified Jesus telling jokes onstage.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue had this to say:

"The hate-mongers typically come out of the woods in the days leading up to Holy Week. Easter can't come and go without someone taking aim at Christianity. This has been a relatively tame Lent thus far. Until, that is, The Cavalier Daily decided to once again dip into the well of bigotry.

"In the Fall of 2006, we wrote to the paper requesting an apology for cartoons that mocked the crucifixion and indicated that the Virgin Mary had an ‘Immaculately Transmitted' venereal disease. (This apology was originally denied, though eventually the vile cartoons were removed from the paper's website and a statement of regret was posted.) And now The Cavalier Daily has returned to its old tricks, just as we approach the holiest time of the Christian calendar.

"Even more telling of the attitude of those at the University of Virginia's paper is the hypocrisy at play. Today's issue also shows a cartoon that acknowledges that any and all depictions of the Muslim prophet Muhammed are banned. Last year, the paper's editorial board forced a cartoonist to resign after the campus chapter of the NAACP objected to a cartoon mocking Ethiopians. And in 2005, the paper was quick to apologize to homosexuals for remarking that the crane is the ‘gayest-looking of all birds.'

"It's clear that there's a double-standard at play in the offices of The Cavalier Daily. Tell the paper's editor to afford Christians the same consideration shown to blacks, Muslims and homosexuals."

Write to Elizabeth Mills at editor@cavalierdaily.com

Amen!

This is yet another examole of the hate that is out there for all things holy. I had just finished reading the article on CE about Lewis Black when I read this. Just curious- are the students of faith at UV protesting this? It's their paper, I hope there are mass demonstrations on campus against this behavior.

There is a boiler plate apology on the Cavalier's website today. If you are up for a laugh, read it, then read how it passed their censorship policy, then read their censorship policy. These are the journalists of tomorrow, no wonder the media is so horrible. Their idea of what a journalist is supposed to do is skewed from the door.

Sent a letter to the editor as well, who knows if they even read them.

Hey Claire, how's that little Jeffrey? Are you sleeping at night yet?

Hi Elkabrikir,

Jeffrey is doing great, except for the fact that he has to have outpatient surgery for a hernia the day after Easter.  He was scheduled to be baptized on 4/6, but I requested that he be Baptized on Easter Sunday because I thought it was important for him to be baptized before having surgery.  I'm pretty nervous about it, although the doctor says it's very quick and routine.  My main concern is the anesthesia.

Jeffrey is sleeping pretty well.  He has slept through the night about 6 times so far (his version:  bed at 9, bottle before we go to bed, between 10:45 and 11:45, up for a bottle between 5 and 5:30, then back to bed till 7 or 8).  Otherwise, he just gets up once/night.  His napping is improving;  I'd say about 5 days out of 7 he'll take a two hour nap at some point during the day.  I go back to work in 3.5 weeks, and I'm totally dreading it.  At least I'm blessed that he'll be with my husband, so I don't have to leave him in daycare.  But it's going to be a very dark day for me.

Anyway, please keep him in prayer regarding his surgery.  I hope Annalise is doing well.

Well we can look at it this way. As long as we are getting bashed, Satan still views us as a threat. Which is a good thing. We need to keep the faith, and keep doing what we should do. And of course correct the ignorant, inform those who are sinning, and committing blasphemy. But remember also the 10th beatitude. So we should be happy, even though it is rather annoying, and can be very hurtful. Take heart, we are doing things correctly.

It appears there are two things going on at The Cavalier Daily.

First is a tendency towards shocking and offensive "humor" probably (since it is a university paper) in the name of questioning authority and poking fun at the accepted status quo. This is fairly typical of college-aged people and there is a history of college papers doing such things.

Second is a tendency toward catering to certain groups, probably in the name of diversity and political correctness.

The press, even university press, can not have it both ways.  One can not approach "journalism" with an attitude that everything is open to satire and being made fun of, and then distance yourself from offending certain groups.

Note to The Cavalier Daily: It's called hypocracy, and it's what you are supposedly angry enough about to be making fun of in your elders.

Might it have something to do with the tendency for Christians not to riot or issue fatwas?

Oh, but I did issue a fatwa. You didn't get the memo?

Rioting next Tuesday, weather permitting. Irish pot luck afterward.

Ray

good one ray!  Will you have Guiness?

claire, we'll add Jeffrey to our prayer list.  Annaliese is a typical (for me) breastfed baby which means it seems like she never sleeps unless she's latched on.  Ergo my "mean spirited" comments on occasion. I'll be completely nice again in a year.

Right on, Ray!  Can I bring some stink-bombs?  Can I, can I, can I???  Maybe we oughta burn Elizabeth in effigy: whatdaya think?  Laughing

Elka, you are not "mean-spirited"!  Just a little "harried".  And yes, you will survive, honey.

Claire, I'm so thankful to hear that Jeffery is doing better.  Will be keeping his baptism and surgery in prayer!  And, take heart: some time with Daddy is just what a growing boy needs.

Finally, let me be serious.  This whole episode is pathetic enough to bring me to tears.  I know they don't care what Bill Donohue or any of us have to say--that's because they are ignorant and uneducated.  What breaks my heart is that so many of them had to die, AND THEY STILL DON'T 'GET' IT!  How long, O Lord, how long?  Cry

Cooky and Elkabrikir, thank you for the prayers.

Elkabrikir, I've heard the same thing from friends about their breastfed babies.  Annaliese is lucky that you're willing to make the sacrifice for her.  If things were different, I would have loved for Jeffrey to have had breastmilk.   I agree with Cooky;  I can't recall seeing any mean-spirited comments from you.
